PORTLAND, Texas — Construction for a new school in Portland broke ground Wednesday.
A ceremony kicked off construction of a new Gregory-Portland Middle School.

The project was part of a $117 million bond package passed by voters in 2015. In January the district started classes at its newly constructed W.C. Andrews Elementary School.
That project broke ground in 2017.

"WC Andrews was an elementary school we broke ground on a couple years ago. So, here we are two years later, breaking ground on another campus," said Victor Hernandez, Gregory-Portland ISD School Board.

The new middle school is expected to be ready for classes in the 2020 or 2021 school year.
