A father jumps into action after he sees a middle school student hit by a truck while using the crosswalk.
Jesse Messa says he was in the right place at the right time Friday afternoon. He was picking up his daughter from Hamlin Middle School when he saw three students crossing Staples Street in the crosswalk.
One of them was hit by a truck that sped off. Mesa followed the driver for more than a mile through backroads. The driver was eventually stopped by police and identified as 28-year-old Wilfredo Faz. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
“You know, it’s somebody else’s child. His parent wasn’t there, so you know somebody had to do something. If I wouldn’t have gone then he would’ve got away,” said Jess Mesa.
The driver will likely face additional charges including hit-and-run, failure to render aid, and accident causing injury or death. The student was checked out by medics at the scene as is reported to be doing well.
