Local and area Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers and other police officials are rallying together to help a fellow trooper who recently was shot at a traffic stop.

Trooper Moises Sanchez, 48, was shot in the head and shoulder after a routine traffic stop near Edinburg on April 6.

Troopers have organized a chicken and sausage barbecue benefit on May 11 to raise money for Sanchez and his family, Sgt. Nathan Brandley said.

The benefit will begin at 11 a.m. at the DPS office parking lot, 1922 South Padre Island Drive.

A silent auction will be held throughout the day with winners announced at 4:30 p.m.
