A video being shared on social media showing a group Calallen High School students performing a chant loaded with racially-charged and sexually explicit phrases is raising some concern.

The video was allegedly posted by a Calallen student on Instagram and Snapchat after the school’s recent football playoff game in San Antonio.

Calallen Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Artie Almendarez has confirmed that the video was shot on a school bus, and the girls seen in the video are Calallen High School students, ranging in grade level from sophomore to senior.

In the video, several girls, none of whom is African-American, are seen taking turns chanting, using the names Shaniqua and Kanesha, then making a vulgar, sexual comment.

In a statement today, Almendarez said:

“I strongly believe that these girls are not racist. They were mimicking a scene from the movie “Bring It On”, which is about cheer leading. What they did and what they said is completely unacceptable. We don’t condone that at all, and we took immediate action, which I cannot discuss because they are minors, but as a district, we will deal with it accordingly.”

Almendarez said there were adult sponsors on the bus and appropriate action will be take regarding everyone involved.

“This is a great community,” Almedarez said. “It’s an unfortunate, foolish thing these girls did, but it should not be a reflection on the community.”
