BBB: research your tax preparation service before choosing one

A Corpus Christi woman is trying to get her money back after problems with the Internal Revenue Service surfaced during her dealings with a local tax preparation service.

“When I took her my paperwork, I kind of had a feeling that I was going to have some kind of problems with her,” Roxanne Perez said.

The service she chose is Michelle’s Tax Service which has no website and is not listed on the Better Business Bureau’s website, which BBB Regional Director for Corpus Christi Kelly Trevino says is useful tool.

“You can check to see if they’re legitimate tax service,” Trevino said. “If they are, they’re going to be listed.”

Perez says she’s gotten three letters from the IRS detailing problems with her tax documents that Michelle’s Tax Service helped her prepare. Perez says the tax service charged her and her son a combined $350 for those preparations, and she thinks she deserves a refund.

“If she didn’t want to do our taxes, she shouldn’t have taken our money,” Perez said.

She says the tax service also has her tax forms that include sensitive, personal information. That’s all the more reason that Trevino says you should research those companies before choosing one.

“You think about the information in your tax return – your social security number, your kids social security numbers – and you’re handing them over to someone,” Trevino said. “If you didn’t check them out, this person has all your information and in some cases they’re taking your money as well.”
