It only took 17-year-old Jordan Avalos ten months to lose more than 100 pounds, and he did it mostly by boxing.

“I give it pretty much all the credit,” Avalos said.

Weighing in at 309 pounds the summer after his freshman year at West Oso High School, Avalos training and boxing at the Chavarria’s Boxing Club in addition to running and working out with his school’s Junior ROTC.

“With this gym, I shredded [the weight] even faster than before, Avalos said. “I was just dropping weight ridiculously fast.”

He says his mom’s friends were the first to notice his weight loss. His coach at the gym did too.

“He started working out, training slowly, slowly,” Coach Ernesto Chavarria said. “Slowly but surely you could see him start shrinking, losing that weight. Once he lost that weight he started training hard, looking good.”

And Avalos agrees with him.

“I’m not disgusted with myself like I used to be,” he said. “My hands were all fat and chubby, and I was all fat and chubby, and I didn’t like it. Now I look in the mirror and I’m like, ‘Hey! You’re looking good today’.”
