The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Health Department has announced it has shut down the AMC theater after a mice infestation.

The Health Department shut down the theater today at 10:30 a.m. It will remain closed until further notice.

They cannot reopen until they have zero counts of mice and no activity of mice in their theater.

The Health Department has been monitoring the theater for several weeks. The problem came to light after a family watching a movie at the theater on September 21 captured video of two mice under a seat. While inspecting the theater last week, health inspectors found a total of 34 dead mice. Yesterday, they found four more dead mice.

Corpus Christi-Nueces County Environmental and Consumer Health Services Division Manager Lauren Rabe said most of the mice were found under the movie screens’ panels. Rabe said openings in the theater and food left behind by patrons has lead to the infestation of mice.

Meanwhile, health department officials held a conference call with AMC Theater’s corporate office this morning. They have agreed to another another walk through by the Health Department on Friday morning at 10 a.m.

Rabe said AMC Theater has been working to fix the issue for the last few weeks. They’ve hired a pest control company that has been visiting the theater on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The pest control company has been setting out traps and discarding traps.

They’ve also hired a second company to seal cracks. A third company, a janitorial company, has been hired to deep clean the theater.

Rabe said the Health Department will continue to do weekly inspections. They will also be in contact with the corporate office to make sure changes are made.
