CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — For the second school year in a row, Coastal Bend school districts are opening under the shadow of COVID-19.
Corpus Christi ISD employees met this morning to prepare for the coming academic year and discuss safety precautions before the start of the school year next week.
CCISD will open a week from today when it kicks off its fall semester with 100 percent of its students returning to the classroom.
The school district has posted a return to in-person instruction and continuity of services plan on their website last week outlining its COVID-19 protocols.
Although Gov. Greg Abbott has banned public school districts from requiring facial coverings on campus in May, a mask or face shield will be provided upon request.
School officials say they looked into virtual learning but did not pursue it after state lawmakers rejected a bill that would have funded remote options for this school year.
"That is something that we did look into, when it did not pass through the legislative session, and the state decided not to allow it for school districts. We did not pursue it,” CCISD Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez said. “But I would say, if it came to a point that the numbers were that alarming and we would need to re-evaluate, we'll certainly take a look at it at that time."
CCISD officials say they are expecting more guidance from the TEA as more districts return to school and will require everyone on campus to self-screen before arriving.
Administrators continue to encourage staff, families and eligible students to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
