County Appraisal Chief troubled over new Retroactive Tax Appeal law

Posted

A new law will allow property owners to appeal protests denied of their appraisals that date back for years.

Opponents of this new law say it will only create bigger problems. House Bill 380 sets no time limit to appeal a protest of an appraisal. Currently, people have 30 days from the time they received a notice or until May 15th

Without that deadline, Nueces County Chief Appraiser, Ronnie Canales, says it makes it near impossible for local taxing districts to budget for those appeals.  The law would lead to tax dollars being taken away from essential services.  Canales estimates millions are on the line.

The new law takes effect on September 1.
