BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says one of its cadets died after collapsing at the training academy.

The agency announced Friday that 38-year-old Immanuel Washington, of Youngsville, died a day earlier at a Baton Rouge hospital.

Washington was in his third week of training to become an enforcement agent.

The department says Washington finished a more than two-mile run on Wednesday and was in a "cool-down period" when he collapsed.

In a statement, Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Jack Montoucet described Washington’s death as tragic and said he was told Washington "was an excellent cadet and an even better person."

The East Baton Rouge Parish coroner’s office will determine an official cause of death.

Washington is survived by his wife, 3-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter.
