The South Texas scorching heat can be brutal for anyone. Especially our senior citizens.
But to beat the heat, they can come to a "Cooling Center".
One popular hang out for seniors at the Greenwood Senior Center
"I’ve been coming here for 9 years and it’s very good because of all the hot out there," said Lupe Perez.
Many seniors are taking advantage of the program. One reason is to beat the high cost of electricity at home during peak hours.
"I’m trying to cut lights and stuff just to stay cool forget about the lights just to stay cool," continued Perez.
Another place is the Oveal Williams Senior Center. Several come on a regular basis, but the regulars are starting to dwindle.
"Because of a lot of construction around the area, it’s very difficult with the construction in the area to drive here sometimes," said longtime resident Willie Hardeman.
Although it may be a little harder to get to the center, Hardeman says at least you will be out of the heat, maybe grab a bite to eat, and there is a whole lot more
"There are a lot of different services that are offered here so they really should be taking advantage of it," said Hardeman.
The only bad part of the day is leaving. You are back in the hot sun.
