The Purple Door is working to get kids in the Coastal Bend ready for the coming school year, but they need the public’s help to make their vision a reality.

The non-profit, formerly known as the Women’s Shelter of South Texas, is accepting donations of backpacks and school supplies like notebooks, pencils and markers.

The Purple Door’s mission is to help victims of domestic violence or sexual assault in our 12-county area, and say their annual back-to-school drive helps give kids a sense of normalcy on their first day back.

"They’ve experienced such intense trauma,” said Purple Door Deputy Director Kellie Addison. “When they can go in and feel a bit more normal, and have that same fun experience of being prepared on the first day of school, we’re setting them up for success.”

Last year, the organization distributed more than 300 backpacks to local families. They’ll be accepting donations through August 17.
