CORPUS CHRISTI – ‘Tis the season for swatting, slapping, and calamine lotion.  Mosquito season is here and the pesky insects are out with an extreme appetite following the heavy rains that lingered in the Coastal Bend last week.

The City began its mosquito abatement process this weekend.  Vector Control worked all weekend spraying larvicide and setting up more than 40 traps around the city.

Crews are waiting to get test results back to see which area of town has the highest amount of adult mosquitoes so they can concentrate efforts there.

According to Mike Gillis with Corpus Christi Animal Care Services, the highest activity time for the bloodthirsty critters is early in the morning and right before dusk.  He recommends avoiding the outdoors at these times of day.

The City recommends homeowners remove all standing water on their properties or use mosquito dunks to kill larvae in the water which can be purchased at home building supply stores like Home Depot or Lowes.  And if going outdoors is a must then wear insect repellant with DEET.
