In an effort to prevent social gatherings and stop the spread of COVID-19, the City of Corpus Christi and the City of Port Aransas have started closing down their popular attractions.

At 5:30 a.m. Friday, Corpus Christi's Parks and Recreation department locked the front gates and barricaded the back entrance of West Guth Park. The crew then moved to Labonte Park, where all entrances were blocked by barricades there as well.

Mayor Charles Bujan of Port Aransas said there are already barricades on the roads leading to the city's beaches. The barricades will keep vehicles off of the beach.

Mayor Bujan says this is a way to prevent social gatherings. He says exercise and water sports are allowed on the beach, as long as there is constant movement and a 6-foot distance between people.

Tailgating , fishing and social gatherings are prohibited. There will be a $1,000 non-compliance fee.

In addition to Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales' orders, all beaches and parks will remain closed until 6 a.m. Monday.
