These are booming times for gun stores and places like Academy Sports and Outdoors.

Firearms sales are through the roof.

At the Sharpshooter on Staples Street, display cases were almost empty and there were only a few rifles left on the rifle racks.

The manager there says they get new shipments of guns and ammunition in every day, and by the end of business, they're sold out.

So why are so many people arming themselves?

“People are scared, they want to be able to protect themselves, protect their families and defend their toilet paper i guess,” said manager Daniel Garcia.

If you do manage to find a firearm to buy, you won't be taking it home anytime soon.

The mandatory background check that normally takes about a week is now running up to three weeks behind schedule because of the high volume of sales.

If those who have a concealed handgun license don't need to go through the background check.
