ROBSTOWN, Texas — These are exciting times for Robstown girls basketball because on Friday night they have a chance to win their first district title in school history.

They have been playing girls basketball at Robstown for 44 years but this could be the best team in school history. With a record of 18-2 overall and 7-0 in district play they will host Calallen with a chance to win District 31-4A

"Since our freshman year, nobody has really thought about Robstown basketball,"Lady Pickers guard Kayla Mesa said. "Getting the recognition we deserve makes us very proud"

History was already made Tuesday when senior Kiara Hawkins became the school's all-time leading scorer. During her four-year career, Hawkins has scored more than 1,500 points.

"I have put in a lot of hard work and a lot of heart and just kept pushing," Hawkins said.

So why has Robstown suddenly turned into a girl's basketball powerhouse?

It starts with longtime West Oso coach Roy Williams who came out of retirement six years ago to take over the Robstown girls basketball program.

"We just tried to come here and change the culture and make kids believe they can be champions in everything they do," said Williams. "I came in expecting to be here about two years but I have such great kids here and it's tough to leave when you have great kids."

The Lady Pickers have their shot at history Friday night when Calallen visits.
