It's student vs. coach as Beeville takes on Sinton

This week's Friday Night Fever Marquee Matchup takes us to Beeville, where the Trojans will play host to the Sinton Pirates.

But this matchup is more than just your ordinary game.

This week's Marquee Matchup has a very interesting twist regarding its two head coaches.

Sinton Head Football Coach Michael Troutman was a star player for the Pirates from 1989 to 1992.

It just so happens Beeville Head Football Coach Chris Soza was on the Sinton staff during that time.

So Friday's matchup is pupil vs. coach

"I was working with coach Davenport as the offensive coordinator and coach Troutman was our center and linebacker at the time, so a lot of respect for him,” Soza said. “He has come a long way, and I know he did a good job last year during his first head (coaching) job so we're looking forward to it."

Troutman echoed respect for his former coach.

“He was one of my mentors here as a high school player, and one of the reasons why I am a coach is because of those coaches I had here in Sinton, and coach Soza was part of that, so it's exciting to play against one of your coaches from high school,” Troutman said.

Both teams suffered opening-night losses, so this game could be a building block for the winner.

"We just have to jell as a team,” said Sinton lineman Nate Martinez. “You know, last week we were not really playing as a team."

Beeville defensive back/wide receiver Andre Trevino said that’s been key for the Trojans as well.

"We have just been trying to work hard, trying to get in as much work as possible,” he said. “Even coming in on a Saturday sometimes, getting in any work we can. Just trying to build chemistry with each other.”
