Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs dies two days after start

On Saturday night, Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs was on the mound in a big league ballgame. On Monday, the Angels announced that the 27-year-old pitcher has died.

Skaggs, a fifth-year member of the Los Angeles Angels, was in the midst of one of his best professional seasons. He started the year with seven wins in 15 starts.

The cause of Skaggs' death has not been released. The Angels have canceled their scheduled game with the Rangers tonight.

The Southport Police Department in Texas released a statement saying that Skaggs was found unresponsive in his hotel room at 2:10 p.m. CT this afternoon. He was declared dead at the scene.

The police statement claims that no foul play is suspected in his death.

"Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time," The Angels said in a statement. "There are no other details at this time, please keep Tyler’s family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred also issued a statement.

“I am deeply saddened by today’s tragedy in Texas," Manfred said. "All of us at Major League Baseball extend our deepest condolences to Tyler’s wife Carli, their family, their friends and all of his Angels’ teammates and colleagues. We will support the Angels’ organization through this most difficult period, and we will make a variety of resources available to Tyler’s teammates and other members of the baseball family.”
