One woman is dead after a traffic accident on the Crosstown Expressway late Monday night.

Corpus Christi Police Department officers responded to the scene of a crash at approximately 11 p.m.

Four people reportedly were in the car: the woman; a man who has serious, but non-life-threatening injuries; and two children. The three survivors were taken to the hospital -- the children's condition is unknown at this time.

"Officers got here, they found a vehicle that was on (its) roof," said CCPD Lt. Gabe Garcia. "When the officers did get here, they did find one female inside the vehicle that was deceased."

Garcia said the children are young, but did not release the children's ages. The man and woman approximately are in their 20s.

Witness reports say it appears a car hit a guardrail at the top of the Horne Road overpass of State Hwy. 286 and landed upside-down on the Crosstown Expressway access road below.

Garcia said the department still is unsure of what caused the wreck.

"Officers are still investigating up there on the highway, so we don't know the actual cause as of right now," he said.

Preliminary investigation indicates it was a one-vehicle accident.

"There's nothing up there that shows us, right now, that there was another vehicle involved," Garcia said.

The northbound lane, the lane headed toward downtown Corpus Christi, currently is closed.
