The Department of Public Safety has released more information about a one-vehicle rollover Wednesday morning on Highway 44, just west of Alice, that killed two women and sent another to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Spokesman Sgt. Nathan Brandley said the passengers -- Rose Elia Chacon, a 76-year-old woman from Laredo, and a 47-year-old woman from Encinal -- apparently were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle after the driver fell asleep at the wheel and veered into the grassy median.

The driver overcorrected, making the grey Mitsubishi pickup truck they were in flip numerous times and ejecting the passengers.

The second passenger's identity has not been released because her family has not yet been notified.

Multiple witnesses were in the area and attempted to render aid after the accident, Brandley said.

The driver, a 57-year-old woman from Laredo, has been taken to Christus Spohn Hospital in Alice in serious condition. She was later HALO-Flighted to Christus Spohn Hospital Shoreline in Corpus Christi.

Brandley said that the driver of the vehicle was traveling eastbound, and was found in the westbound lane of State Highway 44 after the accident.
