FALFURRIAS, Texas — The City of Falfurrias is coming together to remember one of its own.
Flavio Garza III died in a tragic car crash early Saturday morning. He was 36 years old.
But before his family can lay him to rest, it is asking for help from the public.
Garza was described as a man who not only loved his family, but also his community, and this is why many are standing together in honor of him.
When driving around in Falfurrias you may see purple wreaths around on display and this is in memory of Falfurrias City Councilman Flavio Garza III.
“And he was the type of individual who would vote a certain way if he felt that it was the right way to vote, even if it wasn't on the popular vote,” said Falfurrias City Manager Melissa Landin.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers said the crash took place near Brooks County and said Garza veered into oncoming traffic, hitting an 18-wheeler.
Garza died at the scene.
Landin said Garza was a man of integrity who was very involved in his community.
“In a small city you know you're limited in resources in a rural community, but he understood the value of collaboration and working with other entities like the school district and the county and the fire department and neighboring cities to ensure that we got what we needed,” said Landin.
Yet having a funeral can come with unforseen costs, which is why the family has started a GoFundMe account to help with expenses.
Also, other businesses have decided to hold a benefit to offer financial help.
“But in times of need and times like this we find a way and they find a way to come together to provide the resources that are needed for families and individuals to get through the tough times, and this is one of them,” said Landin.
