UPDATE 1-28:

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has released a statement regarding the Rockport-Fulton Middle School teacher using racial slurs and inappropriate language in front of students.

In part, it reads:

We firmly believe that A.C.I.S.D. will work with students and staff on the obscene and disgusting use of such words and their negative historical content....the NAACP has communicated with the State and National office regarding this incident and will continue to reach out to A.C.I.S.D. to immediately resolve the matter. The NAACP demands an immediate formal apology to the students, parents, African American families and the ACISD school board from the teacher. In addition the NAACP Legal Redress continues to investigate the matter.

A Rockport-Fulton Middle School teacher has been placed on administrative leave after reportedly using racial slurs and inappropriate language in front of students.

The incident reportedly occurred during lunch, when a small group of students was gathered with the teacher.

The language reportedly was caught on video, and parents approached district administration after hearing the video.

Rockport-Fulton teacher placed on administrative leave

“A conversation about Martin Luther King Jr. Day was brought up and the teacher asked my daughter’s friend to explain why the n-word offended her,” said Sarah Kelley, a Rockport-Fulton Middle School parent.

Kelly adds the children notified their school counselor that same day because the conversation was getting out of control. Several parents met with the Rockport-Fulton Middle School’s principal.

“And they’re just trying to push it under the rug like it was the girls’ fault, and that’s what really makes me upset. How is it the girls’ fault? They didn’t bring that up,” said Rockport-Fulton parent Willie Simmons.

The district confirmed the teacher is on administrative leave pending further employment action, adding “this is not who we are, and we do not condone the language that was used. Her language is also no reflection on the rest of our devoted middle school staff. We want to assure parents and the community that such conduct will not be tolerated.”
