CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The school bell will be ringing soon and it's time for drivers to pay attention to their speed.

Officers with the Corpus Christi Independent School District say they need drivers to be vigilant when entering a school zone.

If you're in a school zone, not paying attention to what you are doing could put many students in harm’s way.

Pretty soon, many CCISD students will be getting dropped off or even walking to their campus.

Officers with the school district say keeping students safe is their main priority and drivers need to have the same mind-set.

“We're going to need everyone's help and support in ensuring the kids walk safely to school so understand there's going to be a delay just plan for it it's an exciting time for everyone involved so let’s be patient and understand that slowing down at school zones will keep everyone safe,” says Chief of Police Kirby Warkne with the CCISD Police Department.

Chief Warkne also says during the summertime these school zones are not operating.

So, that means drivers may have gotten into the habit of keeping their normal speed when going through a school zone.

Officers also say, with driver’s cooperation this will keep many students safe.

“Understand that everyone wants to enjoy the first day they're all going to be there if you want to avoid the crowd get there early but understand that it will be crowded because everyone is super excited to be back,” says Chief Warnke.
