BEE COUNTY, Texas — A man died late Wednesday night after Beeville police responded to reports of smoke at an East Kennedy Street apartment complex, authorities said.
Police were called to the 1100 block of East Kennedy Street at 11:20 pm after receiving reports of smoke in the residential complex. Upon arrival, officers confirmed smoke was present and immediately began evacuating residents from nearby units while searching the affected apartments.
During their search, officers found an unresponsive man inside one of the units. The victim was quickly removed from the apartment, and officers initiated life-saving measures. Emergency medical personnel continued resuscitation efforts upon their arrival, but the man was ultimately pronounced dead.
According to the Beeville Police Department, the investigation is ongoing. However, preliminary findings indicate no signs of foul play, and authorities believe there is no continuing threat to public safety.
Police have not released the victim's identity or additional details, citing respect for the family during this difficult time.
"We ask that the community keep the family and all those affected by this tragic incident in their thoughts during this difficult time," the department said in a statement.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the smoke and the exact circumstances surrounding the man's death.
