A 46-year-old man remains in Nueces County Jail on murder charges after an incident at Water's Edge Park Friday night that led to the death of a 40-year-old man earlier today.

Mark Stuyvesant is in jail in lieu of bonds totaling $1,000,000 on the murder charges, police said. He originally had been charged with aggravated assault.

Police were dispatched to an assault with injuries in the area of Shoreline and Park at 9:55 p.m. Friday.

Officers located the injured man who was unconscious and was transported to a local hospital. He later died on Saturday.

Police soon located the suspect who cooperated with them. The man told them there had been an altercation which led to the victim falling and knocking him unconscious.

No weapons were found that were believed to have been used in the altercation, police said.

It is currently unknown if the deceased man died from the injuries of the assault, from previous injuries or from a medical episode, police said.

The cause of death and ultimately the charges facing Stuyvesant will be dependent on the Medical Examiner's report.

Police said the charges against Stuyvesant were upgraded to murder after the man died on Saturday.

The incident was not considered to be a random act. Police said that Stuyvesant and the dead man knew each other before the incident.
