Local leaders' rally encourages "No" vote to TWIA rate hikes

Elected officials and area business leaders held a rally at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center with a message for Texas Windstorm Insurance Association policyholders: Just say no!

A TWIA committee is meeting Thursday, and it's expected that committee will recommend a rate hike.

The board voted against a 10 percent rate hike during its meeting in Galveston back in August.

Organizers of today's rally say TWIA is considering a five-to-10 percent rate hike.

“If you're gonna be transparent and open to the public, just tell them, that you're not going to keep your word at zero rate hikes,” said State Rep. Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi). “Don't go out and do secret meetings or low-key meetings so the public can't be involved. So we're calling them out and we're letting the public know: It's time to keep your word TWIA: zero percent rate hike.”

Policyholders are being encouraged to go to TWIA's website and send them an e-mail with a simple message -- no rate hike.
