CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — An area family is urging people to be responsible before getting behind the wheel.
At the beginning of 2019, we told about the Serna family.
They were hit by an alleged drunk driver traveling the wrong way.
Michelle Serna says their family was torn apart after the wrong-way driver hit them and took a loved one.
Serna says drivers need to be smart before hitting the road if not, that could lead to serious consequences.
Four members of the Serna family were trapped inside their vehicle and had to be pulled free.
Police say the Serna family was hit by wrong-way driver Richard Lopez and he was believed to be under the influence of alcohol.
Lopez died at the scene.
“I would say, to just be responsible, I know they're people out there that are going to you know make some decisions or have fun or course I want people to be more responsible,” says Serna.
Michelle Serna was one of the four in the car at that time and she suffered complications with her intestines.
Serna says everyone was rushed to the hospital and her father in law, Guillermo passed away.
The Serna’s say they have each other as a support system.
Michelle now lives in Kansas with her husband Jason and says what helped was talking about this situation with professional help.
This situation was brought up by the Corpus Christi Police Department and officers say they don't want another tragedy like this to happen again.
