ARANSAS PASS, Texas — They say one man's trash is another man's treasure.
That is certainly the case for an Aransas Pass veteran who is selling his wood creations to sustain a living.
Following a divorce in Oklahoma -- Franklin Adams and his little dog, Toto, came to Aransas Pass -- where Adams was born.
But, they were homeless, living from beach-to-beach.
"There's drug addicts down there," Adams said. "There's alcoholics down there. There's judges. There's lawyers. All these people are the same, they have hearts. They get thrown from society and this is where they wind up."
The U.S. Navy veteran said he's been crafty his entire life. As a kid, he sold homemade jewelry and crosses to tourists.
He thought he'd give it a try once again, because he had no choice.
"I've been known to dig in dumpsters, trash cans, rivers and creeks -- just picking up stuff," he said. "Been doing it a long time."
Adams said that he has been homeless for three years now.
He calls himself a "garbologist," because he literally turns trash into treasure.
"He told me: 'I've been making all these creations. Do you wanna come see?' " Dianna Aston said. "And he opens his car, and I'm like, 'Wow!.' "
Aston met Adams on the beach in 2013. They became friends, and she has supported his craft business, cheering him on along the way.
Adams said he makes $500 a week, and still prefers staying on the beach than in his home.
He said he has seen other homeless people who don't know how to get back on their feet because they've been down so long.
"Every time I've ever been down," he said. "I realize I put myself there and I got myself back out of it."
Aston said her friend is a changed man and that makes her proud.
"From when I met him living on the beach with his little dog," she said. "He is like a different person now."
