CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Del Mar College is helping parents check one more box off their child's back to school list.

College of Cosmetology students gave free haircuts to every student that dropped by on Thursday. The efforts also helped the future hairstylists practice their skills.

"Some families come in with more than 3 kids so I'm sure that cost-wise for back to school it's a huge benefit to our local citizens," Lissa Gonzalez, DMC Cosmetology Instructor.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the college's cosmetology lab accepted walk-ins. Students kindergarten through 12th grade were able to get a free buzz.

Instructor Lissa Gonzales says this experience helps her students get a better understanding of what cutting hair will be like in the real world for real clients.

"They have learned everything at this point and now its just perfecting their skills," says Gonzalez,"The best thing to do is kind of put their feet to the fire a little bit and they learn so much."

The fifteen college students are all in a dual credit program trying to graduate from high school with a cosmetology certification from Del Mar.

So far the event is proving to be beneficial for both students and area families.

"Focus on their school supplies and their school clothes so it does help out alot," said Christina Gonzles, parent.

Del Mar College will give free haircuts on Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their west campus.
