CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A new historical marker was dedicated to the late Jovita Gonzalez de Mireles today.

Students gathered outside Mireles Elementary School on Cimarron as members of the Nueces County Historical Commission unveiled the state marker.

Mireles was an accomplished writer of folklore and a dedicated teacher in the community.

In fact, she created CCISD’s Spanish language program.

"She was a very good teacher and insisted that we use Spanish in the classroom although we didn't at the time know a whole lot,” said her former student Harriet Tillman.

Tillman said Mireles had a special kinship for all of her students.

“She did not have any children of her own, so considered all her students her children,” she said.

Mireles taught at both Corpus Christi and Ray high schools for more than 20 years up until her retirement in 1966.
