The heat index has skyrocketed across the Coastal Bend and it's causing concern for area senior citizens who don't have air conditioning in their homes.

On Tuesday, the heat index hit 110 degrees in Corpus Christi, and on Wednesday, it reached 108.

In past years, senior citizens were able to seek refuge from the heat at senior centers across Corpus Christi. This year, those centers are closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

On Wednesday evening, Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni told KRIS 6 News the City is working on a plan to help.

The City says it is looking at alternate locations.

"We're looking at how to keep seniors safe and give them an option to cool down if they need it," Zanoni said.

Definitive plans should be announced by Friday.
