The Corpus Christi Independent School District has an unexpected opening on its board of trustees after District 4 representative Catherine Susser resigned.

Susser confirmed that she submitted her resignation about six weeks ago, calling the decision “difficult." She remained on the board to make for a smoother transition after the recent elections earlier this month, she said.

The CCISD Board of Trustees, which will have one new member sworn in at today’s meeting, will decide who will fill the remainder of Susser’s term, which expires in 2022. Susser says she has stayed on in her position until after the election to let the next board decide her replacement.

According to a text message from Susser, she now spends most of the time in the Dallas area, and “simply could not juggle my board responsibilities to the level that the community deserves.”

Susser was first elected to the CCISD Board of Trustees in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018. She served as board president in 2018 and 2019.

The board now will have until March to name a replacement for Susser's unexpired term or for a special election to be called.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
