The announcement came after City Council emerged from executive session late Tuesday afternoon.
The position has been vacant since Margie Rose’s resignation in May 2018.
Zanoni, will receive a base salary of $300,000, Mayor Joe McComb said.
Zanoni, a native of Mexico, Maine, was appointed Deputy City Manager of San Antonio in November 2012. He has oversight of the Transportation and Capital Improvements Department, the Planning Department, the Neighborhood and Housing Services Department, the Pre-K 4 SA Program and the 2017-2022 bond program.
He has worked 20 years in municipal government, including the last 18 with the City of San Antonio.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy City Manager, Zanoni’s role with San Antonio including holding the positions of Assistant City Manager and Director of the Office of Management and Budget.
Zanoni had oversight over community-wide efforts such as bond programs, the city’s Pre-K 4 Initiative, and the City’s SA Tomorrow Comprehensive Planning effort.
Zanoni, who is married with three sons, earned a master of Public Administration from Florida State University and a bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Jacksonville University.
He won out over three other finalists for the job: Corpus Christi assistant city manager and acting city manager Samuel “Keith” Selman, former Fort Lauderdale, Fla. city manager Lee Feldman and former Cincinnati city manager Harry Black.
Before Tuesday, it had been nearly three weeks since the city’s list of finalists for the city manager’s job was narrowed down to the final four candidates.
Council members made their final choice during an executive session this afternoon.
Last week’s specially called meeting to that was canceled, just moments before it was supposed to begin.
The four finalists were also interviewed by council members last week.
Zanoni was a finalist late last year when San Antonio council members hired Erik Walsh as the replacement for retiring City Manager Sheryl Sculley.
