The driver of a vehicle hit on New Year’s Day has passed away nearly two months later.

71-year old Guillermo Serna passed away yesterday, according to a family member.  He had been hospitalized due to his injuries from the accident but had been taken off life support.

Mr. Serna, his wife, son, and his son’s girlfriend were traveling on SPID near Staples when they were struck by Richard Lopez, who was going the wrong way.

Lopez died at the scene.  Police believe he may have been under the influence of alcohol.

The Serna family members were trapped in the wreckage and had to be pulled free.
Funeral services for Mr. Serna are scheduled for Thursday, March 28th, at the Seaside Funeral Home at 10 a.m.
