Rockport couple moves into one of first two ‘HAP’ houses

A Rockport couple will spend their first night in their new home tomorrow thanks to the Homeowner Assistance Program. The so-called HAP house is one of the first two to be built through the HAP program. The other one is in Victoria.

“If you compare, I would never go back to the old house,” home recipient Juanita Rodriguez said.

Not that she could if she wanted to. Hurricane Harvey damaged the home Juanita shared with her husband, Juan, so badly they had to tear it down. Only after applying to the Texas General Land Office for HAP funding have they been able to rebuild.

“Everything is big and spacious in this house,” Rodriguez said of her new home.

The General Land office has more than $121 million to give to families like the Rodriguezes in the Coastal Bend region alone, but not everyone is eligible. To apply to see if you are, follow this link to the land office’s website.

“It gives you hope, and you keep moving,” Rodriguez said of applying for HAP funds. “Now, we’re really moving.”
