Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety say two children were killed and two were transported in critical condition after a train struck a car.
The crash happened around 10:35 a.m. Saturday on County Road 1136, just south of Mathis, Texas.
Sgt. Nathan Brandley says a car disregarded a train crossing sign moments before the crash. The car was hit by the train.
Sgt. Brandley says when first responders arrived on the scene, a 12-year-old boy along with an eight-year-old boy were pronounced dead at the scene. A five-year-old girl and the driver of the car were left in critical condition.
The male driver of the car was transported to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital. The five-year-old girl was HALO-flighted to Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
Brandley says none of the children were restrained in the vehicle while the five-year-old girl was not in a child car seat.
Investigators with the San Patricio Sheriff’s Department along with DPS Troopers are investigating the crash scene. An investigator with Union-Pacific was also at the scene.
