100 acres burned at palm tree farm near Robstown

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A large fire broke out at a palm tree farm today.

Eight fire departments battled the blaze for much of the afternoon. The fire started just before 3 p.m. just north of Robstown at County Roads 69 and 44.

About 100 acres were scorched. Firefighters also did what's called back burning, they set fires to control the spread of the flames.

The smoke could be seen from Calallen and

"A lot of palm trees weren't even on fire yet," said Jenna Carpenter, who lives in the area. "By 3:50 p.m. we were watching palm trees that weren't on fire when we got there turn to ash."

It took just under two hours to put out, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire still remains under investigation.
