Election Day is 54 days away, and during this pandemic, Nueces County officials want to make sure residents can vote safely.

To that end, the American Bank Center will now be used as a polling location for early voting and during the general election Nov. 3. American Bank Center General Manager Matt Blasy said the building is a perfect polling place.

“The spacing and the ability to focus on social distancing and focusing on safety measures, we thought the American Bank Center was an ideal location and I’m glad to have played a role in giving back to the community,” he said.

Blasy said he reached out to the county about hosting a polling location because of its size.

Curbside voting also will be available for those who can’t get out of their vehicle.

Nueces County Clerk Kara Sands also said hands-free voting also will be available for safety reasons.

“Voters, when they go into vote, they’ll be given a Q-tip," she said. "Since they’re touchscreen, they’ll be able to vote.”

County commissioners approved 25 polling locations for early voting: New Life Church at the former Sunrise Mall; Grant Middle School; and Adkins Middle School are some of the locations also helping to alleviate longer lines.

“Voting is your right," Sands said. "And we want everyone that wants to vote to feel confident and secure that we’re going to protect you, we’re going to do everything that we can.”

The county hopes to have between 75 and 80 locations available on Election Day across Nueces county.
