In Wednesday's city/county COVID-19 daily briefing, Annette Rodriguez with the Nueces County Health District said some employees at the local processing plant STX Beef (formerly Sam Kane) tested positive for the virus.

"We have a handful of people who have actually tested positive," Annette said at today's weekday briefing.

Meat packing plans are considered critical infrastructure. So other workers who came in contact with the individuals who tested positive for the virus are still allowed to work, as long as they are not sick.

"When you have a critical infrastructure such as a meat processing plant, so normally when you have a positive, all those people that come in contact with them - we take them out of the mix to self-isolate of quarantine. That's not the case when you have essential infrastructure like this," said Rodriguez. "So they can actually work as long as they're asymptomatic, as long as they are wearing their protective gear."

She did not know if it was 3 or 4 exactly. The role of the employees has not been released.
