CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Corpus Christi kicked off the ‘Safe Fun-Fitness’ Initiative in May to promote health and well-being among residents. The program has since expanded to include activities tailored to children making it more family-friendly.

The fitness program includes free yoga and dance classes at the Water's Edge Park every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The City also promotes walking, running, and bike riding along the bayfront by shutting down a section of Ocean Drive to create a special fitness lane at that time.

City Manager Peter Zanoni says the Initiative was conceptualized as a way to encourage people to continue exercising outdoors without having to worry about any possible spread of Covid-19.

“We have a taped off area, there’s a little X where we want one person to stand so there’s good social distancing,” said Zanoni. “And we have some sanitation.”

The City is adding new activities for kids starting this Saturday.

“They’ll have things like micro soccer, youth fitness obstacle course, and noodle hockey,” said Zanoni.

The program expansion is intended to include the whole family, in hopes that Nueces County can tackle health issues as a community.

“A lot of our residents are obese and we have a high diabetes problem as well,” said Zanoni.

However, it is not just about physical health, Zanoni says his goal is to make the city more economically sound, too.

“We want to be a city where we can attract, retain, and grow our white-collar workforce,” said Zanoni. “We want some high paying jobs.”

“And, a company is going to look to move to a place that’s healthy where they know their employees will come to work every day.”

All classes are guided by fitness instructors from Be Fit Productions.

If you’re still uncertain about working out at the Bayfront, Zanoni adds that there will be live music, free water provided by your local H-E-B, and prize giveaways.

There is limited space for classes. You can register in advance at:www.cctexas.com/safefunfit
