A district and school nurse from Taft ISD has reportedly died from COVID-19.

Taft ISD officials confirmed the death was due to the virus and it happened Wednesday night.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of fellow Greyhound, Marty Vara," said Taft Superintendent Ricardo Trevino in a post Thursday.

According to Trevino, along with being the district nurse, Vara was the school nurse at Woodroe Petty Elementary School.

"He was a friend to everyone he met and a source of strength for all who knew him," said Trevino in the post. "While we grieve his loss, we know that he is finally at peace."

No information has been released as to the cause of death or when it specifically happened.

Trevino assured a counselor is available for Taft ISD students and staff if needed.

"Our Thoughts and Prayers go out to his family and friends," said Trevino. "He will be forever remembered and forever missed."
