CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Action 10 News has an update on Sawyer the pit bull mix who was in bad shape when he was rescued early Tuesday morning.
After he was rescued, Sawyer tested positive for heartworms, intestinal worms, pneumonia and he was severely dehydrated and underweight.
Sawyer was seen walking along County Road 28 towards Petronila. A picture of Sawyer -- who is severely underweight and in terrible condition -- was shared on social media and got the community's attention. Several rescuers came out to find him. It was a weekend long search.
But here's the great news - Sawyer was released last night from the Animal Medical Corpus Christi and taken to his new foster home.
"He has still a long road of recovery ahead of him, but he has shown a lot of improvement," Veterinarian Danielle Wallek said."So I am very hopeful that he'll continue to get better over the next few weeks and we will keep treating him for little stuff along the way. But I think he's a fighter so he'll come out well."
We're told Sawyer quickly learned how to sit so he could get a treat. Now he sits down in front of everyone he meets.
As soon as he makes a complete recovery he will go to live in the Pacific Northwest.
