CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A local church is making sure families have a turkey and some side dishes on the table this thanksgiving.
What looked like Santa’s workshop was actually the church of hope on Thursday night.
Dozens of church members were preparing for their big "giving thanksgiving" event this Sunday, Where they're planning to give away 500 turkeys!
There's no catch, no income requirement, and no fees. And it won’t just be turkeys, the church is also giving away sides to go with it.
“Green beans, corn, fruit cocktail, pumpkin, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and dressing,” said Diana Pena, church member.
She says each year the church feels compelled to provide a Thanksgiving meal to families who can't afford one.
“We're so bombarded in our society with all of these pictures, commercials and social media of the perfect meal but then what if you tell your family I don't have the money to give you a turkey this thanksgiving,” said Pena.
But it's not cheap. The church hosted a giving thanksgiving golf benefit to raise the money needed to make this giveaway possible.
“You can imagine buying 500 turkeys, that raises thousands of dollars that pays for all the groceries and turkeys,” said Pena.
And it can't be done with just a few people. The church gathered dozens of women with servants’ hearts to fill 500 bags of groceries in 30 minutes; record time.
“We never know when the opportunity to be a blessing and to make a difference in someone’s life is going to happen,” said Alva Lozano.
The Church of Hope will be giving away the turkey’s and sides on Sunday Nov. 24, 2019 from 1 to 3 P.M.
