CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A woman has set up a self-defense and empowerment class to help young women learn how they can protect themselves in a worst case scenario.

It's a long way from earning a black belt, but if you want to start learning self-defense, Vicki Bosman is offering young women the opportunity.

She's been practicing martial arts for 25 years, earning herself a 4th degree black belt, allowing her to teach others martial arts.

“We have to learn confidence, we have to learn to stand up,” said Bosman.

Now she wants to use her skills to help young women ages 13 and up learn the basics of self-defense.

“Women seem to be targets for many things, we appear to be the weaker sex, we're usually more distracted with children,” said Bosman. “We tend to be higher in the statistics for abuse especially domestic violence.”

Bosman is hosting the Diamond Warrior Extravaganza where instructors will be teaching hands on Krav Maga, self-defense, situational awareness, and other martial arts skills.

The ultimate goal is to encourage females to defends themselves in the case that they're attacked by a stranger or even someone they know

“A lot of us are distracted with our phones while we're walking or distracted with technology or something gets in the way and it makes us more of a victim of becoming abused or assaulted or possibly kidnapped or hurt,” said Bosman.

Motivational speakers will talk about their experience with domestic and sexual abuse and share how they were able to overcome it.

“Also, to get out of the mindset that hey we're the ones to blame like ‘maybe it’s my fault maybe if I would have done this’, no whoever touches you hurts you or thinks that way it’s their fault,” said Bosman.

There is no monetary fee to attend, but Bosman says to get in she asks everyone to donate a bag of diapers or baby wipes.

Those will be given to the Corpus Christi Hope House to help local women in need.

The event will be held at Del Mar College, 101 Baldwin Boulevard (Gymnasium) Corpus Christi, TX 78404
