CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Counterfeit contact lenses could cost you your vision.

Fake accessories might be great for a horror movie, but counterfeit contacts can be a real nightmare.

The contact lenses you might find at beauty salons or gas stations can be the unlucky omen that leads to poor vision or blindness.

“If you don't get a contact lens that properly fits it can create scars, it can create infections,” said Dr. Christopher Majka. “The biggest thing that we worry about is infections that can eat into the cornea really quickly leading to severe results.”

Majka says contact lenses are designed to be specifically made for the contour of your eye, and only a physician can prescribe lens that properly fits.

But cosmetic lenses are usually sold as 'one size fits all' items.

“These cosmetic contact lenses tend to be more invasive, they tend to be more bacteria related and they eat into patients’ corneas and they end up needing corneal transplants because of this,” said Majka.

A sign that you may be causing damage to your eye or getting an infection, is if your eyes start to hurt while the contact lenses are in.

“You get redness and irritation and it can last when you take the contact lens out,” said Majka.

Losing your sight because of fake lenses is downright frightening, so this Halloween keep the candy near and your eyeballs clear.
