Firefighters with the Corpus Christi fire department were called out to battle a large building fire on the city’s southside.

The fire broke out around 11:00 p.m. Sunday night in an industrial area near Holly and Ayers Road.

When firefighters arrived, the reported flames could be seen coming from a building.

Jim DeVisser, a Battalion Chief with the Corpus Christi fire department, said firefighters saw the flames at least 80-feet-high.

DeVisser said the building on fire had numerous propane tanks inside the building as well as tires, paint cans, and engine blocks.

“You know when propane tanks go off or a paint can, or tire, it throws stuff everywhere, ” DeVisser said.

Animal Control workers arrived at the scene also to rescue two dogs that were inside in the building when the flames broke out.  Firefighters say it took an hour and a half to get the fire under the control.

It’s still too early in the investigation to determine what caused the fire.
