With all of the recent mass shootings, some school districts are thinking about arming certain school employees.

Aransas Pass Independent School District is among those.

The Board of Trustees held an open forum Monday evening to discuss the idea, and allow the public to share their thoughts.

Most of the public at the meeting agreed with the idea, saying they want school employees to carry guns to protect students.

The details aren’t all ironed out, but Aransas Pass Police Chief Eric Blanchard clarifies that not just any school employee can carry a gun at one of their schools.

"Just because you have a license to carry in the state of Texas doesn’t mean that you’re the type of person that needs to be armed in school," said Chief Blanchard. "We are looking for someone who is very adept at using a firearm, such as ex-military experience, maybe even been to combat."

The Board of Trustees will decide whether or not this will happen.

They would have to vote to allow school employees to have guns.

The vote has yet to happen.
