CORPUS CHRISTI – EMS units transported someone to the hospital this morning with a possible case of hantavirus.  Medics were instructed to wear isolation suits when they entered a home on the 500 block of Claride in Flour Bluff.

According to the CDC website, people become infected through contact with hantavirus-infected rodents or their urine and droppings.

Possible cases of hantavirus must be reported to the Health Department. Health officials are monitoring this particular case and are awaiting lab results to confirm if it definitely is hantavirus.  The test results should be available in 5 days.

The hantavirus can progress to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which can be fatal and can also cause Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS)

The CDC recommends rodent control in and around the home to prevent the spread of the hantavirus infection.
