A man was taken into police custody after officers found him in possession of a handgun outside a Corpus Christi high school campus.

In a statement posted online, officials with Moody High School confirmed that a man had been arrested after being observed by campus security officers.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, an individual described as a "young man" who was "not a student in the district" was spotted by officers on campus monitoring the school grounds.

The suspect reportedly made an "inappropriate gesture" and was intercepted by Corpus Christi Independent School District Police officers as he crossed the street nearby the school.

Police searched the suspect and reportedly found him in possession of a handgun. He was then arrested without incident and taken into police custody.

The campus was not placed on lockdown, according to Dr. Sandra Clement, the school’s principal, in a statement posted to her Twitter page. However, security and police conducted a full search of the campus. In addition, the school said it was frequently reviewing security protocols and would do so again.

No other information about the suspect or incident was immediately available.
