CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A mother passed away in a tragic car accident over the July Fourth weekend.

Her children were also involved in that wreck are recovering.

Sixteen-year-old Jason Powell was able to walk our Action 10 news team through everything that happened on that terrible day.

Powell says things without his mother are not the same.

It was on Saturday when Powell was headed to Beeville with his mother and three younger siblings.

That trip would change his life forever.

Jason and his mother heard a noise coming from the truck they were traveling in.

They pulled over but could not find anything wrong.

As they kept going, they noticed something just wasn't right.

The truck began drifting and then flipped over several times.

His younger siblings were transported by HALO flight to Driscoll Children's Hospital.

However, Powell's mother Soyna Munoz died at the scene.

“We're alike, I appreciate every little thing that she has done for me and my siblings she kept us under her roof even though we struggled big time, so I respect her for everything,” says Powell.

Three of the siblings have been released from the hospital except for his 9-year-old sister.

She has major swelling in her brain.

As for Jason, he suffered a punctured lung, broken ribs, and numbness in one arm.

During Jason’s recovery, he says thinking about his mother keeps him strong.

“She just meant everything to me, because there's parents who don't care about their kids and she did and she made sure she did,” says Powell.

There will be a benefit in Sonya's honor at 11 a.m. Saturday at 3209 Foley Street.

The family says any donation helps and will go towards funeral and medical expenses.
